Review

This is a fantastic book for mom’s who not only want to stay in the game, but make the best financial decisions for their family.  While I am an “empty nester”, I lead a group of entrepreneurial women in a monthly class. Most of them are young mom’s trying their best to take care of their kids and still contribute financially to their household.  I purchased this book for them to read and was very pleased with it.  I wish I had this advice when I was a young mom. It’s direct, applicable and gives practical advice for mothers on how to be smart about money. Thrift is the best use of all your resources — including money AND time — so mommy savings tips need to expand from coupon-clipping and into longer-term investments.  Moms can feel overwhelmed thinking about and planning for the future, but the author makes it “doable” by sharing her own experience, while also drawing on others’ stories.  The best part is that you can walk away from this book with clear ideas about how to take better ownership of your family’s finances. This is  must-read for women, mom’s and mom’s-to-be and even an old timer like me found so much to learn!

Ordinary Miracles: Awakening to the Holy Work of Parenting

    Ordinary Miracles
    By Rachel S. Gerber
    Herald Press
    Retail Price $12.99
    Amazon Price: $10.48

    Book Description:

Where is God in the midst of temper tantrums, laundry, and accidents? In this honest, devotional memoir about mothering three busy boys, ordained Mennonite minister and blogger Rachel S. Gerber gives voice to the grit of parenting with stories of hope. Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, who failed at first to recognize the Christ walking beside them, Rachel learns to discover the gifts and holy calling hidden in the events of harried family life. Overburdened parents will find encouragement in Rachel s own story of how, in her darkest hour of disorientation, in the most mundane and ordinary days of motherhood, and in moments of exhilaration, joy, and beauty, God is present.

Ordinary Miracles offers hope and a sense of purpose in the midst of the exhausting and harrowing days of parenting young children. It is an invitation to consider where God surprises us in the midst of ordinary life, awakening our inner sight to see that as we care for our children, we love and serve the God who created them.

If you have young children, you need this book.  This is my all-time favorite parenting book, and I’ve read dozens. While so many authors give parents specific how-to tips and make us feel like failures if we don’t follow their advice exactly, Gerber shows us it’s a tough but fulfilling, and often hilarious calling to raise young children.  The author does an excellent job of telling it just as it is…crusty milk and cereal covered floor and all! She shares thoughts  and encouragement for the exhausted mother of young ones.

Mom Seeks God: Finding Grace in the ChaosMom Seeks God
      By Julia Rolle
      Abingdon
      Retail Price $15.99
      Amazon Price: $11.99

      Book Description:

The first months and years of motherhood can be the most challenging and disorienting of your life—and faith. When you’re surrounded by the happy chaos of children, how do you spend quiet time with God if the only quiet time you get is while you sleep? How can you demonstrate a solid spiritual life to your children if you don’t have time to pursue one yourself? When Julia Roller discovered that her spiritual growth had been stunted by the busyness of life with her toddler, she embarked on a yearlong journey through ten spiritual disciplines: prayer, fellowship, submission, study, simplicity, silence, worship, fasting, service, and celebration. As she focused on each discipline, she discovered practical ways to observe them—even in the chaos of her every day.

Mom Seeks God offers a highly relatable story and useful advice to help new moms grow in their faith as they address life changes with grace, patience, and prayer. As readers discover ten essential faith practices, they’ll learn that motherhood, itself, is a spiritual discipline, and may be God’s most effective technique for forming a more Christ-like life.

Many moms struggle with finding time to spend with God. You begin to wonder if it is even possible, between diaper changes, carpools, meals and messes?   This author shares the story of her journey and how she found a way to get alone with God, even amongst the chaos of family life. One of the main ways God speaks to His children is through His calling on their lives. That means that moms have a high calling, indeed! It is possible to hear God’s voice and respond even as they carry out the daily tasks of mothering their children. This book is relatable, practical, realistic and usable. It will radically change your life.
